A Health Based Place of Safety is provided for people detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act.

These service users are typically brought to the mental health trust by the police for a full and proper assessment of their mental health needs.

Accommodation, sometimes referred to as a 136 suite, is provided at St. George’s Hospital, Stafford and The Redwoods Centre, Shrewsbury. The suite at St. George’s Hospital is able to meet the needs of both adults and children if required.

The service is available 24 hours a day and 365 days a year and assessment can lead to a voluntary or compulsory hospital admission, or discharge to the community with appropriate sign posting and mental health service follow up in place.
