Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (MPFT) is delighted to announce that colleagues have been shortlisted in four award categories at the HSJ Awards 2021, recognising their outstanding contribution to healthcare – in what has been an exceptional and challenging period across the sector.

Mental Health Provider of the Year
MPFT has been shortlisted in the Mental Health Provider of the Year category, recognising the organisation’s commitment to partnership and quality improvement alongside a strong focus on staff engagement and involvement in research.

Freedom to Speak Up Organisation of the Year
A clinical matron based at The Redwoods Centre in Shrewsbury has been recognised for her work with the Freedom to Speak Up team in encouraging staff to voice concerns and raise issues by putting a special focus on listening and feeding back to staff.

Award for Patient Safety
The Targeted Care Pathway (TCP) is a mental health pilot scheme MPFT’s Inclusion service has introduced at HMP Hewell to improve the safety and wellbeing of prison residents in the absence of in-patient nursing services.

Provider Collaboration of the Year
The collaborative, which is led by MPFT, provides adult eating disorder services serving a population of 4.5 million covering the West Midlands.  It has improved the quality and ease of access to services, reduced patients going out of area for treatment, reduced length of stay and reduced the average distance patients need to travel to receive care by 90 miles.

Despite the demanding circumstances of the past 18 months, over 1000 entries were received for this year’s HSJ Awards, with 205 organisations, projects and individuals making it to the final shortlist. The volume and standards of applications has been a true testament to those health and social care staff, who continue to push outstanding work and transformational projects across the sector.

The judging panel was once again made up of a diverse range of highly influential and respected figures within the healthcare community, including Sir Bruce Keogh (Chair, Birmingham Women’s and Children’s FT); Marie Gabriel CBE (Chair, NHS Race and Health Observatory); and former HSJ Trust of the Year winners Ann Marr OBE (Chief Executive, St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals Trust) and Richard Mitchell (Chief Executive, Sherwood Forest Hospitals FT).

Following the intense and in-depth judging process, MPFT’s teams have been shortlisted for their ambition, visionary spirit and the demonstrable positive impact that they have had on both patient and staff experiences.

Neil Carr, Chief Executive at MPFT comments, “We are so thrilled to have been shortlisted in not one, but four categories. This recognition really does reflect the collaborative efforts and dedication of our colleagues who work so hard to successfully deliver high quality care to all those who need our services".

HSJ editor Alistair McLellan, comments “On behalf of all my colleagues, I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust on being nominated in these four categories in this year’s HSJ Awards. The applications we receive always present our panel of judges with a very difficult task as the standard is unfailingly high and the breadth of innovation and passion for patient care is always so inspiring.

“This year, we really have been overwhelmed with the level of entries, particularly when set against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic and the huge challenges faced by our health and social care workforce.

“We are therefore looking forward to welcoming all our finalists to the live ceremony in November and joining us in celebrating their incredible achievements and commitment to excellence.”
