Steve Martin is a Unit Manager/Matron at St George’s Hospital in Stafford and manages two inpatient wards for adults with acute mental illness. He has been shortlisted for a prestigious, national Health Education England, Healthcare, Education And Training (HEAT) Award.

These awards celebrate and recognise the very best in leadership, education, training and workforce development within the NHS. Steve has been shortlisted in the Champion of the NHS Constitution category which recognises someone who exemplifies the values of the Constitution; working together for patients, respect and dignity, commitment to quality of care, compassion, improving lives and that everyone counts.

Steve took charge of the two wards in 2017 and has demonstrated that he is a leader with a clear compelling vision that can engage all levels of the workforce and service users and carers.  Under his leadership the wards have achieved recognition through the Royal College of Psychiatry accreditation scheme.  Steve acts as a role model for other staff and inspires them to live the values of the NHS Constitution and his behaviour has led to tangible improvements in the service delivered to our patients.

The judges said “We have had tremendous interest in the awards with nearly 800 nominations submitted and being shortlisted is a great achievement and something to be very proud about”.

Lisa Agell, Head of Mental Health Services commented “We are delighted that Steve has been recognised for this award.  We aim to put people at the heart of what we do and Steve has demonstrated he is living our values and making life better for our communities, both the people we serve and our staff”.

The awards ceremony will be held in London on Thursday 18 July 2019.
